Leverage in Trading, Explained: The Loan That Trades Against You

Leverage is borrowed money that lets you control a position larger than your account. With $1,000 and 10x leverage you command $10,000 of exposure: every 1% the market moves now moves your account by 10%. That single sentence contains everything important about leverage - it multiplies outcomes, not skill. It makes good decisions pay more and bad decisions cost more, at exactly the same rate.

The math nobody sits with

The seductive half of the math is obvious: a 5% move with 10x leverage is a 50% gain. The half that empties accounts is the mirror image, plus one asymmetry. First, the mirror: the same 5% move against you is a 50% loss, and recovering from minus 50% requires plus 100%. Second, the trap door: liquidation. With 10x leverage, roughly a 10% adverse move wipes the entire margin - the exchange force-closes you, and unlike an unleveraged dip, there is no "waiting for it to come back". The position no longer exists. At 20x the wipeout distance is about 5%; at 50x, about 2% - less than Bitcoin's average daily wiggle. High leverage doesn't just raise risk; it converts ordinary volatility into a death sentence, and normal market noise into your liquidation event.

There are quieter costs too. Funding fees on perpetual futures charge you around the clock for keeping the borrowed exposure open, which means a leveraged position bleeds even when price goes nowhere. And spreads plus slippage scale with position size - you pay them on the borrowed part as well.

Why exchanges hand out 100x

Leverage exists because it's profitable - for the lender. Exchanges earn fees on your full position size, not your margin, and liquidations are a business, not an accident. When a platform offers 100x to a first-week trader, it isn't a compliment about their skill. The professionals the marketing invokes - funds, prop desks - typically run effective leverage in the low single digits with strict risk systems around it. The 100x button is retail-only, and it's not because retail knows something the funds don't.

Rules that make leverage survivable

Leverage isn't evil; unmanaged leverage is. Four rules do most of the protective work. Size from risk, not from leverage: decide what percent of the account a losing trade may cost - 0.5-2% - place the stop where the setup is invalid, and let those two numbers dictate position size; leverage then only determines how much margin gets locked, not how much you can lose. Always know your liquidation price and keep it far beyond the stop - if the exchange can close you before your stop fires, the position is oversized, full stop. Start at 2-3x or less: it teaches every mechanic - margin, funding, liquidation - at survivable stakes. Never add leverage to a losing position: averaging down borrowed money is the single fastest route from drawdown to zero.

The honest framing: leverage is a tool for experienced traders with proven, journaled edges who want capital efficiency - not a way to make a small account big quickly. Used for the second purpose, it reliably makes small accounts smaller.

Indikora's coach helps enforce exactly this discipline: it checks position size against your stated risk per trade before entry, flags oversized and stop-less positions, and its journal shows what your leveraged trades have actually returned versus your unleveraged ones - your own data, which settles the argument better than any warning.

Frequently asked questions

Is leverage the same as margin? Margin is the collateral you post; leverage is the multiple of exposure it buys. 10x leverage means your margin is one-tenth of the position.

What leverage is safe for beginners? The boring, correct answer: 1x until a journal proves an edge, then 2-3x at most. Anything above 10x makes routine volatility lethal.

Can I lose more than I deposit? On most crypto platforms liquidation caps losses near your margin. In some margin and forex setups, losses can exceed deposits - read the account terms before, not after.
