Automatic Trading Journal for MT4, MT5 and Crypto: Stop Logging Trades by Hand

Every serious trading book says the same thing: keep a journal. And almost every trader who tries starts a spreadsheet, fills it carefully for two weeks, and then abandons it — usually right after a losing streak, which is exactly when the journal would have been most useful.

The problem was never discipline. The problem is that manual logging is the wrong tool. Copying entry price, exit price, size, fees and timestamps by hand for every trade is tedious, error-prone, and emotionally hardest exactly when you need it most.

What "automatic" should actually mean

A real automatic journal does three things without you touching a keyboard:

1. It imports executions, not summaries. Your broker knows every fill — partial entries, scale-outs, fees, swaps. A journal that only stores "one row per trade" loses the details that explain your results. The right unit of record is the individual execution; the journal then rebuilds your round-trips from those fills.

2. It covers everywhere you trade. Most traders don't live on one venue. You might run a forex account on MetaTrader, hold crypto on an exchange, and test ideas in a simulator. If your journal only reads one of them, you're back to spreadsheets for the rest. Indikora syncs read-only from crypto exchanges, imports MT4/MT5 accounts through your broker's investor password (the read-only credential — the journal can see your history but can never place a trade), and accepts CSV for anything else. One calendar, every venue, with per-account filtering when you want to compare them.

3. It computes what you'd never compute by hand. Two numbers change how you read every losing trade: MFE (how far price went in your favour while you were in) and MAE (how far it went against you). A loss with +3% MFE means your idea worked and your exit didn't. A "win" with −8% MAE means you survived something that should have stopped you out. Add fee totals, R-multiples and hold-time distributions, and patterns appear that no memory can reconstruct.

The question a journal must answer: which setup pays?

Raw trade lists don't improve anyone. The value comes from grouping: performance by setup, by hour of day, by symbol, by holding time. If your breakout trades earn +1.2R on average and your dip-buys bleed −0.4R, that single report is worth more than a year of screen time.

Most traders never tag their trades, so those reports stay empty. Indikora auto-tags each imported trade from the daily market context at entry — breakout, trend-follow, dip-buy, range-fade, counter-trend — using the same open indicator math it publishes elsewhere. Your own labels always win; the auto-tag only fills the blanks it can defend, and leaves the rest honestly untagged rather than guessing.

Journals are rear-view mirrors. A coach looks forward.

The honest limitation of every journal — including ours — is that it reviews the past. The pattern it finds ("you revenge-trade after two losses") only helps if something interrupts you before trade number three.

That's the part we care about most: Indikora's behavioral coach reads your real imported trades, learns your specific failure patterns, and steps in before the next entry — not in a Sunday review. The journal supplies the evidence; the coach acts on it in the moment.

What to look for (in any journal, not just ours)

  • Read-only by design. API keys with trade permission, or master passwords, have no business in a journal. Investor passwords and read-only keys only.
  • Executions, fees and partial fills preserved — not one-row summaries.
  • Multi-account aggregation with per-account comparison.
  • MFE/MAE and R-multiples computed from real candle data.
  • An honest empty state. If a metric can't be computed (no stop recorded → no R-multiple), a good journal says so instead of inventing a number.

Indikora's journal is free during the open beta, imports your last 30 days automatically on connect, and never asks for anything beyond read access. Bring your MT4/MT5 investor login or a read-only exchange key, and your first filled calendar is about two minutes away.
